The Hudson County freeholders board honored one of its own, a firefighter and a police officer yesterday for their efforts to rescue a 91-year-old woman who died in a Downtown Jersey City fire earlier this month.

Freeholder Eliu Rivera, D-Jersey City; Firefighter Israel Rodriguez, who was off-duty at the time of the fire, and Police Officer Sal Noto all suffered smoke inhalation and were hospitalized briefly after rushing into the burning building at Villa Borinquen on Second Street and Marin Boulevard on May 7.

The men were eventually pushed back by the intense heat and smoke that claimed the life of Elisa Rivera - no relation to Eliu - and they were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center where they were treated and released.

The resolution passed in their honor at yesterday’s freeholder meeting says they acted “swiftly and selflessly” in coming to the aid of a person in peril.

It commends them for being unexpectedly placed in a life-threatening situation and acting quickly to save others while risking their own lives.
