T he Bayonne Fire Department rescued a 73-year-old woman trapped in her flipped-over car in her driveway Thursday, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.

Eleven firefighters worked for 20 minutes to rescue the woman, who was pinned between the driver’s side door and the steering wheel. Her only injury was pain in her left leg, Rogers said.

The driver was turning into her driveway on Avenue A at 5:25 p.m. when her foot slipped off the brake and hit the gas pedal, causing the vehicle to turn on its side, he said.

Rogers said the vehicle came within inches of hitting the house, but only damaged a few garbage cans.

The woman was transported to Bayonne Medical Center for treatment of her leg pain, and a tow truck arrived to right the vehicle, Rogers said.

A woman in a motorized wheelchair fell about 30 feet down a casino hotel elevator shaft early Saturday, a city fire official said.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to rescue the woman, who was conscious as she was taken out and transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, said Battalion Chief Michael Mooney.

Mooney did not immediately know the injured woman’s condition, but said she was “extremely fortunate” to be alive.

Two workers at Bally’s Atlantic City’s Claridge Tower also were injured and had to be taken to the hospital.

The accident took place at about 3:30 a.m. on the casino hotel’s mezzanine level. The woman was trying to catch an upward-bound elevator, Mooney said.

She did not — and her wheelchair crashed through the now-closed doors on the second floor. The elevator car was already on its way up and she fell. Her wheelchair fell on top of her.

Two Bally’s workers rushed over right after the accident and were injured while looking down the elevator shaft. Mooney wasn’t sure how.

Firefighters had to rig a rope and pulley system to get the injured woman out, Mooney said.

Mooney did not immediately have more details about the accident.

A nursing supervisor at AtlantiCare’s Atlantic City campus was not immediately authorized to release the injured woman’s condition.

Bally’s spokeswoman Alyce Parker said the injured woman was staying at the hotel. She said the company is aiding the investigation.

Minivan flips on way home to New York

The News Transcript
http://www.gmnews.com

MANALAPAN - The combination of speed and a highway left slick by an earlier rain is believed to be responsible for a minivan overturning on Route 9 north late in the evening of May 17.

The accident occurred about a quartermile north of the Gordons Corner Road overpass, according to Manalapan police Lt. Lloyd Drucker. He said the accident that occurred at 11:48 p.m. is believed to be the result of the vehicle’s unsafe speed on a slick road.

According to Drucker, the 2008 Chrysler Aspen was carrying nine people when driver Richard Salmon, 18, of East Elmhurst, N.Y., lost control of the vehicle. Drucker said neither alcohol nor drugs were believed to be a factor in the accident.

According to a police press release, “The vehicle slid from the right shoulder area, flipped onto the driver’s side, then collided with the curbed center median where it was launched back onto its tires. The vehicle was still unstable and began to slide on the median and eventually rolled onto its passenger side. The vehicle came to rest facing east on the center median.”

Drucker said police estimate the minivan slid about 60 feet before flipping. He said unsafe speed may be what caused Salmon to lose control of the vehicle. No traffic summonses were issued to Salmon at the time of the accident.

All nine occupants of the minivan were out of the vehicle when police arrived at the scene of the accident.

In addition to Manalapan police, the Gordons Corner Fire Company, the Englishtown Manalapan First Aid Squad, the Marlboro FirstAid Squad andMarlboro police responded to the scene.

Drucker said seven people were transported to area hospitals: five individuals were taken to CentraStateMedical Center, Freehold Township, and two individuals were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

Manalapan police Sgt. Edward Niesz was one of the responding officers at the scene and was able to supply additional details.

According to Niesz, the people in the minivan were friends who were heading back to New York after a day at the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in Jackson. The vehicle had been rented in New York.

Niesz said the five people who were transported to CentraStateMedical Center were taken there because their injuries were not thought to be serious.

He said the two people who were transported to Jersey Shore were sisters. Niesz said one girl was determined to have injuries that needed treatment at a trauma center. The other girl, who was less seriously injured, asked to be allowed to accompany her sister to Jersey Shore and was permitted to do so.

The remaining two people who were not injured accompanied their friends to CentraState and were later picked up by friends or family members, Niesz said.

Niesz said summonsesmay be issued to the driver after an investigation of the accident has been completed.

The minivan was towed from the scene byWesternMonmouth Tow ofManalapan.

No update was available on May 19 on the condition of the girl who required treatment in the Jersey Shore trauma center.

Man unhurt in crash after he fell asleep at the wheel

WARETOWN: A 58-year-old Toms River man walked away from a motor vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon, after he fell asleep at the wheel of his Toyota Camry, which eventually ended up running into a billboard.

Sneddon said it appears Applegate dozed off as he drove south on Route 9. The car then drifted about 100 feet from the roadway, striking trees and ultimately coming to rest on the advertisement.

Traffic was slowed in the area while members of the Waretown Fire Company worked to remove the vehicle’s door.

No summonses were immediately issued. Patrolman Adam Risden is investigating the crash.

MONTGOMERY — A township resident was flown by medical helicopter to a trauma hospital after the car he was driving was struck head-on by another vehicle on Route 206 near the Princeton Airport, police said.

Police said John Higgins, 68, of Rockaway in Morris County was driving north on Route 206 at 3:30 p.m. Monday when he looked away from the road. When he looked up, Higgins saw traffic stopped in front of him, so he swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision, police said.

But in doing so, Higgins’ car crossed into the southbound lane and collided with the oncoming car being driven by Sergio Delguidice, 19, of Montgomery, police said.

Police said Delguidice was flown by helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick to be treated for a broken leg, facial lacerations and other injuries.

His passenger, Sarah Massone, 20, of Montgomery, was taken by ambulance to University Medical Center at Princeton to be treated for a broken wrist, police said.

Higgins suffered a cut to his leg, but declined medical care, police said.

Police said Higgins was issued a ticket for failing to keep right.
